AMALIA GLACIER

AMALIA GLACIER

Nature in this area is enormously varied: ducks, quetros, dolphins, cormorants, cypresses, lengas ñirres, ferns, etc., all of which will astonish those who regard the planet from an environmental point of view During our tour, we will see a large variety of birds on the cliffs and in the forests. We will also see dolphins cavorting next to the ship or the excursion boats. The fauna of the region is absolutely wild and for this reason we ask our passengers to care for them and not interfere with their surroundings. The bird population increases between December and March, as these are the months in which they breed. Patagonian trees are intensely green, with coigue leaves changing to yellow and red in autumn, after which they fall off. These humid forests are varied in terms of soils and flora, and are known as the “Valdivia Forest”, with one of the highest rainfalls in the world. Cruceros Skorpios gives you the chance to see local flora and fauna in its natural state.

ALSINA GLACIER

ALSINA GLACIER

On sailing along the Fiordo de las Montañas, we sight various glaciers, the penultimate being the Alsina, a steep tongue of ice that comes down the mountains towards the sea until it reaches a tiny bay protected from the strong winds that prevail in the area. We lower our exploration boats and sail along shallow channels with an abundance of rocks and algae, which the Skorpios crewmen negotiate with ease. Once we reach the bay, we see his small but impressive glacier,, with its light blue, dark blue and white ice, and its crevices and ice towers, and if we are lucky, we shall be able to see an ice fall. When the engines stop for a moment, we can hear the tinkling of the ice in the water, together with the sound of the ice inside the glacier. This glacier renders us speechless and reminds us that we must care for our planet, as it already has a rock formation that indicates that the glacier is entering its final phase. This depends on us; if we care for the planet and avoid global warming, our great grandchildren might get to see this natural wonder.

EL BRUJO GLACIER

EL BRUJO GLACIER

Glaciar El Brujo is the impressive and magnificent glacier located at the end of Fiordo Asia. Glaciar El Brujo is an enormous ice wall that fascinates the traveler. For this tour, we will lower our excursion boats and approach the site, to disembark on an incomplete magmatic rock, which volcanologists call “garbo”. On going ashore we walk on the rock, which is rather slippery when it rains, but is like walking on sandpaper in good weather, so that our shoes manage to get a good grip. We are so near this glacier that we can even touch its ice formations and take photographs of the ice floes stranded on the rocks. The place also gives us the chance to watch how the floes shatter at a height of more than 70 metres and observe the glacier’s 2 kilometre wide structure. We are undoubtedly in the midst of absolutely virgin land.

ANGOSTURA WHITE

ANGOSTURA WHITE

There are only two options for sailing from Puerto Natales to the Magellanic channels and the glaciers of the Southern Ice Field: one is the Canal Kirke, which we cover at the beginning of the tour, and the other is Angostura White, which is only 80 metres wide, where Skorpios III carries out an interesting navigational maneouvre. This is the last excursion on our programme, and we carry it out as soon as the ship clears these narrows. We lower our exploration boats and sail into the islands and channels in the area. A place filled with lush trees that reach the sea. If we are lucky, we will able to sight cormorants, quetros and carancas and their chicks. Two haired seals and dolphins also abound in the area, as the tides attract a variety of fish on which these animals feed. While sailing along these channels, close to the shore we can imagine how the Kaweskar, the original inhabitants of these lands, lived.

BERNAL GLACIER

BERNAL GLACIER

This place is the most beautiful location in the Chilean fjord and glacier region; to get there, we must trek through the Andes Mountains and reach a natural amphitheatre. We are the only Chilean shipping company to reach this area; we are surrounded by ice, and we get a feeling of real Antarctic, but the mountains that surround us and their stands of trees indicate a warmer Patagonia. In this excursion, Skorpios III will approach the glaciers, and for this we will board the “Capitan Constantino”, a veritable ice SUV. It is a small support vessel which will take us to fiordo Calvo, where we will sight six glaciers that fill these waters with colourful and multiform ice floes. This is where we make our traditional 12 by 30 toast with whisky and millenary ice. The excursion lasts for about three and a half hours, and we reach absolutely virgin, pristine sites, which are inaccessible to other boats. To sail among icebergs is a totally unique, different sensation, which you are not likely to forget while you look at mountains and ice floes that take you back to the Ice Age.
